What is Access Control and Device Control in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.4.x

Access Control is a new component added in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 6.0.4.x. It controls user access to external devices.  This component contains the module Device Control.

The module Device Control allows to block access to the following device types:

  • USB communication devices (modems, phones, etc.).
  • USB printers.
  • USB data storage devices.
  • CD\DVD-ROM devices. This class includes optical devices for reading/writing CD/DVD disks.
  • Disk drives – devices that read/write data on hard and floppy disks.
  • IEEE 1394 devices (Firewire) – devices connected to PC via IEEE 1394 bus.
  • Modems – devices used in communications systems. This class includes: Dial-up, ADSL, Ethernet modems, etc.
  • PCMCIA devices – devices connected to PC via PCMCIA interface.
  • COM and LPT devices. This class includes devices connected to PC via serial/parallel ports (COM and LPT).
  • Streamers – a data storage device that reds/writes data on a magnetic tape.
  • 1284 Dot4 devices – devices connected to PC via IEEE 1284.4 interface.
  • 1284 Dot4 printers - printers connected to PC via IEEE 1284.4 interface.
  • Input devices. This class includes such devices as digital photo cameras and scanners.
  • Infrared devices – devices connected to PC via an infrared port.
  • Memory Technology Devices (MTD) –data storage devices such as flash cards.
  • Multifunctional devices, such as combined devices for storing and reading memory cards, PCMCIA modems, etc.
  • Smart card readers. This class of devices includes all types of smart card readers: prepaid cards, credit cards and others.
  • Windows CE USB ActiveSync devices – devices designed to synchronize data between a mobile device (e.g. pocket computer, smartphone etc.) and a computer.
  • Bluetooth devices. The class includes all Bluetooth devices, which are connected to the computer and managed via Microsoft Windows XP SP1, or higher.

    InformationBy default Device Control allows accessing all device types.


    To limit application access to certain devices, do the following:
  • Open Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
  • Go to the section Protection in the left part of the window.
  • Click on Device Control and choose Settings in the dialogue box
  • Click on Settings button on the right of Enable Device Control option.
  • Check boxes of the device types you want blocked.


    InformationTo apply changes, reconnect the device (for Firewire and USB devices) or reboot the PC (for other device types).
