Local Network agent installation

This article applies to Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0

Connection between an Administration server and antivirus software installed on client computer(s) within a logical network requires Network agent to be installed on client PCs.

The easiest way to install the Agent is via a deployment task. However, there are cases when local installation is either preferred or required as the only way possible.

For example to install Network agent on a computer is installed in a remote office, it is sometimes easier to send a folder with a prepared “silent” installation package into that office. Also, local installation is the only possible way to install Network agent on a client PC running Microsoft Windows XP Home or Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition.

There are two ways you can locally install Network agent:

  • running a Network agent installation file locally. This type of installation requires answering Setup Wizard’s questions (specify an Administration server address).

  • silent local installation. This type of installation requires creation of a special Network agent installation package on an Administration server. Copy the package you created onto the local computer and run the file setup.exe with a special parameter.

InformationIt is impossible to install Network agent on a PC with an installed Administration server.

Silent local installation

  1. Make sure that you are installing Network agent onto a PC which meets its system requirements.

  2. Open the Kaspersky Administration Kit installation folder on the Administration server and find the file lsexec.exe. Copy it into the folder C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit\Share\Packages\NetAgent 8.0.ХХХХ (Network agent version 8.0.XXXX installation package).

  3. Copy the folder C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit\Share\Packages\NetAgent 8.0.ХХХХ to a client PC and run the file lsexec.exe with the switch /S (to install Network agent in silent mode).

    lsexec.exe /S

This method of installation does not display any dialogue boxes to a user because all the settings needed by the Network agent are saved in the configuration file ss_install.xml located in the folder NetAgent 8.0.ХХХХ/exec.

Running a Network agent setup file locally

  1. Make sure that you are installing Network agent onto a PC which meets its system requirements.

  2. Copy a Network agent distribution package onto a local PC or a CD disk.

You can find a Network agent distribution package in the folder C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit\Share\Packages\NetAgent 8.0.ХХХХ created during installation of the Administration server.

If you do not have an Administration server installed, extract the Kaspersky Administration Kit distribution package (archive kasp8.0.ХХХХ_adminkit*.exe) into a folder using an archiver. You will find Network agent installation files in the subfolder NetAgent.

  3. Run the file setup.exe from the Network agent distribution package on a client PC. A Setup wizard will start.

  4. Specify a Network agent installation folder. The default folder is Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\NetworkAgent 8. If it does not exist, it will be automatically created. You can use the button Browse to choose another folder.

  5. Next stage of the Setup Wizard lets you configure connection between Network agent and Administration server.

In order to configure the connection you have to know the following data:
    • address of the PC on which the Administration server is / will be installed. For PC address you can use its IP address (if it is not going to change) or name within MS Windows network (NetBIOS name).

InformationIf Network agent is going to connect to the Administration server via Internet (e.g. you are going to install the Network agent on a PC in a remote office, while the Administration server is in the central office), the Administration server needs to have an external IP address.

    • Port number to connect Network agent to the Administration server. The default port is 14000. You can change it if it is not available. Only decimal values are allowed.

    • Port number for secure connection using SSL protocol. The default port is 13000. You can change it if it is not available. Only decimal values are allowed. To enable connection via a secure port (using SSL protocol), check the box Use SSL connection.
  6. If you are going to connect to the Administration server using a proxy, specify its settings in the Proxy Configuration window, along with an account for authorization.

  7. In the window Administration server certificate, select a certificate for the Administration server to which the Network agent will connect.

    Available options:
    • Default certificate file – Certificate will be received on first connection to the server (enabled by default).

    • Select certificate file – allows an administrator to select a certificate file from the local computer or network to be used for Administration server authentication.

If you select this option, specify a desired Administration server certificate file. A certificate file is named klserver.cer and can be found in the folder Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit\Cert on a PC with installed Administration server. You can copy an Administration server certificate file onto a removable media or the PC.
  8. Next Setup Wizard window contains an option to Start application during install which is enabled by default. This option controls start of a Network agent service after installation is finished.

WarningIf you want to make an image of an operating system with installed Network agent and use it for implementation in a corporate network, you should create an image of a system with Network agent not started yet. It will let you avoid issues with Administration server recognition on such PCs.

  9. Click Install in the final Setup Wizard window.

To check that the Network agent has installed correctly, wait for it to start and open the Administration console. Add the client PC into a group – the client PC icon must become bright (within 15-30 minutes after the Agent has been installed).

Icon brightness indicates if a client PC has established a connection with the Administration server within a set interval of time. A pale icon means that the Network agent did not establish a connection to the Server within the set period of time. The default interval is 60 minutes. This value can be changed in the field Computer visibility timeout (min) in the Administration server properties tab Settings.
