Updates distribution task downloads database updates and hotfixes for the following applications:
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Servers
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition

This task can be useful when there are several hosts in the network protected with the Kaspersky Lab applications mentioned above, but no Kaspersky Administration Kit.
In this case it makes sense scheduling this task to run on a regular basis. This task will download necessary databases and patches into a special folder used by other protected hosts as an update source.

WarningKaspersky Lab releases antivirus database updates every hour, and we recommend scheduling this task to run with the same frequency.

The task Updates distribution is located in Kaspersky Anti-Virus console node Update. Right-click the task and invoke the command Properties to edit its settings:

  • the tab Schedule allows managing its start-up time and canceling its execution at a certain time. The update task cannot be paused or restricted.

By default, the task is executed every week on Fridays.

  • The tab Advanced allows configuring the following additional settings:

    • Duration - maximum duration time. The task will be stopped upon reaching it.
    • Pause from ... to ... - pause the task during this day time interval.
    • End schedule date – since this date the task will no longer run on schedule. The task won't get deleted, and will be available to run manually.
    • Run skipped tasks – how to run run the task if the protected server was unavailable at scheduled run time, e.g. the server or Kaspersky Anti-Virus was switched off.
    • Randomize the task start within interval – run the task with this maximum allowed deviation from the scheduled run time. This option is grey if the task is scheduled to run At program startup, When new updates are downloaded to the repository, or After application update (in Kaspersky Administration Kit).

  • The tab Run as allows changing the user account used to run the task. Depending on task run type (manually or scheduled) it will start under the user account running Kaspersky Anti-Virus service (Local System Account, by default), unless specified otherwise.

InformationA user account used to run Console needs having a permission to start tasks (Manage task status) to be able to start tasks.

  • The tab General allows selecting update source(s)

The following update sources are available on the tab General:

    • Kaspersky Administration Server

Select this option if you are using Kaspersky Administration Kit in the corporate network. Databases will be updated by means of Network Agent installed on the protected server.

InformationIf you are going to use local Anti-Virus update task, we recommend scheduling this task to run When new updates are downloaded to the repository in Administration server console. In this case the protected server will update its databases after Kaspersky Administration server downloads them.
This option cannot be selected locally.

    • Kaspersky Lab's update servers

Select your country in the section Computer location on th tab Connection settings to make Kaspersky Anti-Virus update from the nearest (geographically) update server. If you select Detect automatically, your country settings are taken from your local operating system settings (Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language options > Location).

    • Custom HTTP or FTP servers, or network folders
You can list here several sources, and then enable/disable them in the list (by checking/unchecking boxes). If the task fails to update from the first enabled enabled listed source, it will attempt to update from the next one in descending order. The list order can be rearranged.

InformationIf the task fails to update from Administration server and all listed FTP/HTTP servers, you can enable Kaspersky Lab's update servers as an emergency update source by checking corresponding option below.

The section Update settings allows configuring task functions:

  • Copy program databases updates – download antivirus databases for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition only.

  • Copy critical program modules updates – download hotfixes for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition only.

  • Copy program databases updates and critical program modules updates – download both, antivirus databases and hotfixes for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition.

  • Copy program databases and modules updates for Kaspersky Lab version 6.0 and 8.0 programs – download hotfixes and database updates for the following applications:

    • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations
    • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Servers
    • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition

WarningIf you have selected the option Custom HTTP/FTP servers or network folders as update source in the task Copy updates, make sure this source contains a correct set of databases and patches.
For example, if an update source contains databases for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition while the task is set to download updates for all Kaspersky Lab applications, the task will terminate with an error.

After successful execution of an update task, the updates will be stored in the folder selected in the field Local updates folderC:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kaspersky Lab\KAV for Windows Servers Enterprise Edition\8.0\Update\Distribution, by default.

  • The tab Connection settings allows changing proxy settings

By default, it is supposed that there is a firewall in the corporate network, and FTP connections are established in passive mode. Therefore the box Use passive FTP mode if possible is checked. Uncheck this box if you are using active FTP mode.

Proxy server configuration depends on its existence and on selected update source:

    • If using Kaspersky Lab's update servers

If you are using a proxy server for Internet connections, check the box Use specified proxy server settings to connect to Kaspersky Lab's update servers.
Otherwise uncheck it.

    • If using Administration Server

Transportation is realized via Network Agent installed on the protected server. No additional proxy configuration required.

InformationIf you have enabled the option Use specified proxy server settings to connect to Kaspersky Lab's update servers, and custom sources are unavailable and a proxy server is used for Internet connections, check the box Use specified proxy server settings to connect to Kaspersky Lab's update servers.

    • If using custom FTP/HTTP servers or network folders

If a proxy server is used to connect to these sources, check the box Use specified proxy server settings for custom servers. If there are local network drives on the list, check the box Bypass proxy server for local addresses.

If you have enabled the option Use Kaspersky Lab's update servers if custom servers or network folders are not accessible, and custom source are unavailable and a proxy server is used for Internet connections, check the box Use specified proxy server settings to connect to Kaspersky Lab's update servers.

If a proxy server is used to access update sources,

  1. specify proxy server settings in the section Proxy server settings:

    • if Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol (WPAD) is used in the network, select the option Automatically detect the proxy server settings (enabled by default).
    • otherwise select Use custom proxy server settings and enter proxy address and port.

  2. Select authentication mode in the section Proxy server authentication settings.
