Safe Run in Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 is a secure environment isolated from the main operating system and designed for running applications whose safety raises doubts as well as for working with online banking resources when security of confidential data has a great importance. When you use Safe Run, the real objects of the operating system do not undergo changes. If a virus somehow gets access to the system resources it will be stopped by other protection components, namely HIPS, Proactive Defense and File Anti-Virus. Safe Run in interaction with these components considerably increases protection level against penetration of both known and unknown threats onto your PC.
So even if you run an infected application in Safe Run, all of its actions will be limited to the virtual environment without affecting the operating system.
In Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, Safe Run offers the following functionality:
Suspicious objects detected while you work in the safe environment are quarantined in the normal mode. The type of safe environment and the original file locations are saved in the list of detected threats and in the full report of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. When objects are recovered from Quarantine, they are restored to the original folder. If the original folder cannot be found, Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 offers you to specify a location to restore the object in the environment in which the restoration procedure has been started.
The Safe Run for Applications component from Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 does not function on Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / 7 x64.
The Safe Run for websites mode from Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 does not function on Microsoft Windows XP x64 and functions with limitations on Microsoft Windows Vista x64 and Microsoft Windows 7 x64.
It is recommended to use the Safe Run component for launching suspicious applications as well as trusted applications vulnerabilities of which can be exploited by criminals to access data on your computer. You can run an application in the safe environment as well as use Safe Run for Applications.
Safe Run for Applications opens in the full-screen mode and represents a copy of the main desktop with all file system objects. You can create a list of applications that will run automatically when you start Safe Run for Applications.
By default, after you close Safe Run for Applications, all changes you have made during the last session will be saved and remain available at the next startup. If necessary, you can clear all changes made to the safe environment.
How to open the safe desktop?
You can open the safe desktop by the following methods:
In order to open the safe desktop from the Kaspersky Internet Security main window, perform the following actions:
- open the main application window
- on the lower part of the window, click on the up-arrow button
- select the Safe run for Applications from the list of the main application window components
- on the Safe Run for Applications window, click on the Go to Safe Run for Applications button.

In order to open the safe desktop from the Kaspersky Internet Security context menu, perform the following actions:
- right-click the Kaspersky icon in the right lower corner of the screen (in the Taskbar notification area)
- select Safe Run for Applications from the context meun that opens.

In order to launch Safe Run for Applications using the earlier created shortcut, perform the following actions:
- open the main application window
- on the lower part of the window, click on the up-arrow button
- select Safe Run for Application from the list of the main application window components
- on the Safe Run for Applications window, click on the down-arrow button next to the Go to Safe Run for Applications button
- select Create desktop shotcut from the open menu
- double-click the created shortcut to launch Safe Run for Applications.

In order to open the safe desktop using the Kaspersky Gadget, click on the Safe Run for Application button (the button is available if the corresponding settings are specified).
When you open the safe desktop, the welcome window will appear on the screen.
If you wish to disable the welcome window, then, in the Safe Run for Applications window, check the box Do not show welcome screen in future.
