About the Problem Steps Recorder utility

The operating system Windows 7 has an inbuilt utility Problem Steps RecorderProblem Steps Recorder is able to record the actions required to reproduce a problem in the form of text captures and screenshots. The recorded actions are saved in a file that can be used by Technical support specialists to help eliminate the problem.

Problem Steps Recorder features:

  • Capturing all the actions carried out by user.
  • The actions are recorded in the form of text captures and screenshots, so they can be used by Technical support specialists to reproduce the problem.
  • The utility captures nothing else but the options selected by user.
  • The confidential data entered by user can be excluded from the record.
  • User can add comments while reproducing your problem. It is not only possible to add text comments, but to pinpoint the commented area as well.


Using Problem Steps Recorder

In order to get a Problem Steps Recorder log file:
  1. click the Start button in the left lower corner of the screen;
  2. enter psr.exe in the Search field and press Enter;



  3. click the Start Record button to start recording;
  4. reproduce the actions you need recorded;

    You can add comments while performing the actions to make the record more detailed and comprehensive using the Add Comment button:

    1. select the area to record;
    2. enter the comment in the Highlight Problem and Comment window;
    3. click the OK button.





  5. once the problem has been reproduced, click the Stop Record button;



  6. enter a file name in the File name field in the dialog window Save as;
  7. select the file location (by default, the file is saved to the Desktop);
  8. click the Save button.
  9. the created .html file gets added to a .zip archive. In order to open the file:
    • unpack the archive (for example, WinZip)
    • open the unpacked folder, and double left-click the log file;
    • the log will open in your default Internet browser.
