What is Anti-Spam

Today everyone who works on the Internet comes across unwanted email messages and IM-messages (spam). The Anti-Spam component in Kaspersky PURE 2.0 filters all incoming/outgoing mail for spam and sorts it according to the settings configured. Anti-Spam in Kaspersky Pure 2.0 uses both traditional methods of text analysis and images and cutting edge “cloud technologies” and heuristic analysis.

The Anti-Spam component as an extension module is embedded into the following mail clients:
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003/2007/2010
  • Microsoft Outlook Express (Windows Mail)
  • The Bat!
  • Thunderbird (except version 3.0 and above and portable version - Thunderbird Portable Edition).

By default the Anti-Spam component in Kaspersky PURE 2.0 is enabled and functions in the optimal mode. However, you can disable it or change its security level, if necessary.

Methods and technologies used in Anti-Spam

The Anti-Spam component has two methods of fight undesireble correspondence:
  • Using exact methodsAnti-Spam defines an email as unwanted by distinctive phrases, by undesirable senders (whose addresses are already added to the Anti-Spam database) and by malicious or phishing links.
  • Experts methods allows evaluating the possibility of spam presence based on the mail text analysis or its service information.
The following Anti-Spam features have been added to Kaspersky PURE 2.0:
  • Use technical header recognition technology: the technology analyzes technical headers when detecting the spam factor. Technical headers contain the information about:
    • mail servers the mail was sent through,
    • the anti-virus scan status,
    • the mail level of importance,
    • the program which helped to create the message;
and marks a mail message as Spam.
  • Use text recognition technology of the mail body and of the attached files. Heuristic analyzer technology of the body of the message and the documents attached to it. This analyzer scans the text for the spam factor by defining the subject of the text (for example, tourist advertisement), common spam-phrases (for example, buy Viagra) and etc.
  • Use image recognition technology to detect spam: the technology analyzes graphic objects attached to the letter to get information from the image when detecting the spam factor (using the signature database update); the technology also analyzes the image for text presence, whose characteristics are also analyzed for spam.

If the image signature attached to the mail is known as a spam sample, this mail is marked as Spam

Kaspersky Lab experts have implemented a new algorithm of signatures database update for Anti-Spam which considerably decreases reaction to new spam threats.
