Key file is looks like this: ххххххх.key. It contains auxiliary data required by Kaspersky Anti-Virus to be fully functional, and the following information:
- information about technical support (who is responsible for it and how to get it);
- key name and number;
- limitation on the number PCs;
- license expiration date.
There are several types of key files: commercial key file, trial key file, and beta testing key file.
- Commercial key files serve for activation of legally purchased Kaspersky Lab software. Activation is required to be able to use the software during the period you purchased the license for.
Commercial key files may be valid for 1 year, 2 years, or any other period (special Kaspersky Lab promotions).
On expiration of a commercial key file, the application retains full functionality except it cannot update databases anymore (either automatically or manually). You will still be able to scan your PC for viruses and use all protection components, but they will function using the database set which was actual at the moment your license expired. Kaspersky Lab does not guarantee a 100% protection from new (released after the license expiration date) viruses after your license expires.
Users who use commercial key files have a right to receive full technical support via telephone and HelpDesk system.
- Trial key files allow you to try Kaspersky Lab software during a set period of time. Kaspersky Lab offers trial keys for free.
Trial key files may be valid for 15 days, 30 days, or any other period (as agreed with Kaspersky Lab).
On expiration of a trial key file, the application will stop functioning.
Users who use trial key files have a right to receive technical support only via HelpDesk system.
If you have used a trial key file to activate an application, you cannot prolong your license with another trial key file. Second trial key file expiration date will not go beyond the expiration date of the first trial key file.
- Beta testing key files are made for users who are interested in testing Kaspersky Lab software which was not released yet.
Beta testing key files expire when software testing period ends.
On expiration of a beta testing key file, beta version of the application retains its functionality except it cannot update databases anymore (either automatically or manually).
Users who use beta testing key files have a right to receive technical support via corresponding section of Kaspersky Lab forum or by e-mail as indicated in beta version documentation.
Software cannot function without a key file, and we strongly recommend that you save your key file on a diskette, flash-carrier, or CD once you get it. Then you will be able to restore it if necessary.
Each key file has a number of temporal parameters:
- key validity period. Normally keys have a 12-month validity period.
- key creation date. Date the key was created.
- date from which the key can be installed. For example, this parameter is set on September 1, 2007. If you try to install the key before this date the program will not accept it. As a rule this time parameter coincides with the key creation date.
- date after which the key will not function. This date is counted as date from which the key can be installed + 13 months (for the keys with the validity period 12 months). I.e. the key validity period is 13 months.

Thus you should bear in mind that if a key is installed 1 month later than the date after which the key can be installed, then its validity period will be reduced. Example:
date from which the key can be installed – the 1st of September, 2007 key validity period - 12 months date after which the key will not function – the 1st of October 2008
If you install the key on September 15, 2007, the key will be valid until September 15, 2008 (12 months). If you install the key on October 10, 2007, the key will be valid until October 1, 2008 (11 months and 21 days). I.e. the key will function only until the date after which the key will not function!
You can have two keys installed at the same time: active and reserve. The active key functions from the installation period. An application can have only one key with the active status. The reserve key is activated automatically once the active key expires.
