Kaspersky Security 8.0 for Microsoft Exchange Servers

What is a key file for Kaspersky Security 8.0 for Microsoft Exchange Servers

 ID Article: 4301    Other languages:  Francais  Deutsch  Polski  Русский  Español  English      Views for 7 days 5    Last modified on 30.03.2011 13:15 Printable version

Applies to Kaspersky Security 8.0 for Microsoft Exchange Servers

A key file is your personal 'key'. It keeps all the data needed to use Kaspersky Lab software, i.e.:

  • information about support (who is rendering and where to receive);
  • key issue date;
  • license title and number;
  • information about functionality of the components;
  • license expiration date.

There exist two types of key files:
  • a commercial key file

    a commercial key file serves to activate legally acquired Kaspersky Lab software allowing to use it for a set period of time, as defined at the moment of the purchase.

    Commercial key files can be valid for 1 year, 2 years, or any other term (special Kaspersky Lab promotions).

    When the license expires, the product will keep functioning, but it will be impossible to update its antivirus databases. The product will keep curing infected objects using out-of-date antivirus databases. Automatic database updating from Kaspersky Lab update servers will cease functioning. The product will also reject any manually downloaded databases. Therefore, Kaspersky Lab will no longer guarantee any protection against new viruses.

    Users of commercial key files are authorized to receive full technical support rendered by Kaspersky Lab over phone and email (you can submit a query to Kaspersky Lab Technical Support service by filling in the HelpDesk web form).

  • A trial key file

    A trial key file serves for trying Kaspersky Lab software for a set period of time. Kaspersky Lab issues trial keys on the free basis.

    Trial key files can be valid for 15 days, 30 days, or any other term (special Kaspersky Lab promotions).

    When the trial key expires, the product keeps starting, but it no longer filters the traffic.

    Users of trial key files are authorized to receive limited technical support rendered by Kaspersky Lab by email only (you can submit a query to Kaspersky Lab Technical Support service by filling in the HelpDesk web form).

A product service can be started without a key file, but it will not filter the traffic.

We strongly recommend saving a copy of an acquired key file on a removable media (diskette, flash, compact disk). This is a security measure against losing a key file which is required by Kaspersky Lab software to run.

You can view all information about the license, and add a new key in the GUI by opening the menu tab Licensing.

You can install two keys: active and reserved. An active key is the key being currently in use. A reserved key gets activated automatically upon expiry of the currently active one. An application cannot have more than one “active” key.

You also have an option to configure notifications alerting the administrator about upcoming license expiration (15 days in advance, by default).
