How to turn off System Restore?

System Restore is a special Windows option which allows to restore your operating system after crashes or malfunctioning to the moment when it worked properly.

However, in some cases you may be required to disable the System Restore option (for example, to delete infected files detected by a Kaspersky Lab product in the _Restore folder).

You can try to delete the infected files from the folder. To do it, turn off the System Restore function. 

For users of:

For OS Windows 7

In order to disable the option of system restoration on computers working under OS Windows 7, perform the following actions:

  • click the Start button
  • right-click the Computer item
  • select Properties from the context menu that will open

  • in the System window, click the System Protection link

  • in the System Properties go to the System Protection tab
  • in the Protection Settings section click the Configure... button

  • in the window System Protection for... select Turn off system protection
  • click the OK button

  • in the System Protection dialog window click the Yes button

  • in the System Protection window click the OK button

  • restart your computer.

For OS Windows Vista

In order to disable the option of system restoration on computers working under OS Windows Vista, perform the following actions:

  • go to Start 
  • right-click Computer icon and then select Properties 

  • in the left part of the System window click System protection 

  • in the System properties window go to the System protection tab 
  • in the Automatic restore points window uncheck the system disk with Windows Vista installed 

  • click the button Turn System Restore Off to confirm you do disable system restore. 

  • click the OK button 

  • reboot your PC

For OS Windows XP

In order to disable system restore for OS Windows XP, do the following:

  • right-click My computer icon and then select Properties

 

  • go to System restore
  • tick Switch off system restore
  • press OK or Apply

 

  • confirm that you want to turn off System Restore by clicking the Yes button

  • restart your computer.

After the System Restore option is disabled, start a full scan process in your Kaspersky Lab product:

Once the full scan process is successfully complete, enable the System Restore option.
