2.3 Updating

Types of Updates

Both virus detection and spam filtering are based on signature analysis. Signature analysis is based on the comparison of virus code or spam samples, which are called signatures.

It is clear from the definition that the efficiency of signature analysis requires constant updates of the database of signatures with new samples, the more often the better. This is the idea of updates: loading and adding new signatures of viruses and spam to the database.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange Server has only anti-virus kernels that only require the updating of virus signatures. Kaspersky Security has two types of scanning kernels for the detection of viruses and the identification of spam and requires two types of updates:

  • update of virus signatures and
  • update of spam signatures

Kaspersky Lab offers several products capable of performing spam identification. Unlike the anti-virus products of Kaspersky Lab, the anti-spam products use similar but slightly different technologies and, as a consequence, require different signature databases. For this reason, when selecting a custom source of updates for Kaspersky Security, it is necessary to make sure that the source has the required updates of spam signatures.

Update Sources

Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Exchange Server have the same update capacities. They can be updated from

  • Kaspersky Lab update servers on the Internet
  • custom HTTP or FTP servers
  • local or network folders

Kaspersky Lab update servers are located all over the world. It would be logical for the update module to turn to the nearest update server for updates, which is possible by choosing in the settings the country where the protected server is located.

Despite the fact that both Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Exchange Server can be managed from the Kaspersky Administration Kit, their update from the Administration Server by means of the Kaspersky Administration Kit is not possible. Instead updating from the Administration Server’s shared folder must be used. The access rights to this folder should also be taken into consideration. If anonymous access to this folder is not allowed, it is necessary to enter the username and password in the update settings of Kaspersky Security (Kaspersky Anti-Virus) for Microsoft Exchange Server.

Demonstration

Update adjustment and testing operations may be performed in the interactive tutorial or watched in demonstration mode.
