How to export and restore registry keys into/from a file in Windows Vista/7/2008?

Before editing the system registry will-be-modified sections should be exported or the registry should be backed up. It will restore the system registry to its initial state if needed.

How to export registry sections

In order to export a registry section to a file, perform the following actions:

  1. In the left hand corner of the screen click on the Start button.
  2. In the Search line type regedit and press Enter.

  1. Enter the aministrator password if it is asked for.
  2. Confirm start of Registry Editor it is asked for. To do this, click on the Yes button in the User Account Control window.

  1. In the left hand part of the Registry Editor window right-click on the required registry branch to be exported.
  2. Select Export from the open context menu.

  1. In the Export registry file window enter the file name and select the folder to save the file in.
  2. Click on the Save button.

How to restore registry keys from a file

In order to restore registry keys from a file, perform the following actions:

  1. Double-click the file into which the registry branch was saved, to launch it.
  2. Confirm file launch if it is asked for. To do this, in the User Account Control window click on the Yes button.
  3. In the Registry editor window click Yes

  1. In the Registry editor window click OK once the information has been added to the registry.
