To deploy a VM and modifying its configuration, you need an Administator account with the following permissions:

  • Global.Licenses
  • Datastore.AllocateSpace
  • Datastore.RemoveFile
  • VApp.Import
  • Network.Assign
  • Host.Config.AutoStart
  • Task.Create
  • Global.CancelTask
  • VirtualMachine.Inventory.Create
  • VirtualMachine.Inventory.Remove
  • VirtualMachine.Config.AddOrRemoveDevice
  • VirtualMachine.Config.AddNewDisk
  • VirtualMachine.Interact.PowerOn
  • VirtualMachine.Interact.PowerOff
  • Host.Inventory.EditCluster
  • VirtualMachine.Provisioning.Customize
  • Datastore.FileManagement (Low level file operations)

By default, SVMs are connected to the virtual infrastructure using the account that you specified when installing the Protection Server component. For improved security, you are advised to use the account created for managing SVMs with the preset ReadOnly system role. You can change the account through the product installation wizard.

The account permissions must be granted at the VMware vCenter server level, which is the highest level in the VMware management objects hierarchy.
