Hundreds of new viruses and their modifications appear every day. To ensure your computer's safety, update the anti-virus databases of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 regularly. Application update downloads and installs the following updates on your computer:
  • Computer Protection databases. Data is protected based on the databases that contain the signatures of threats and network attacks and methods of fighting against them. Protection components use it when searching for malicious objects and disinfecting them on your computer. Databases are regularly widened with new entries on threats and methods of fighting them. That is why it is strongly recommended that you update the databases regularly. Along with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 databases, the network drivers that are necessary for network traffic interception are updated.
  • Application modules. Update packages eliminate vulnerabilities in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012, add new functions, or improve the existing ones.
Kaspersky Lab's update servers are the primary source of updates for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012.

Please note: to successfully download updates from servers, your computer must be connected to the Internet. By default, the Internet connection settings are determined automatically. If the proxy server settings are not properly configured automatically, the connection settings can be set manually.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 includes a special option of updating only databases for enabled components. It allows to decrease time required to update databases and their size. If any component is enabled, the application will immediately start update process. Therefore, protection of the computer is always up-to-date.

During an update, the application modules and databases on your computer are compared with those at the update source. If your computer has the latest version of the databases and application modules, you will see a notification window confirming that your computer's protection is up to date.

If the databases and modules on your computer differ from those on the update server, the application downloads only the incremental part of the updates.

Not all the databases and modules are downloaded from Kaspersky Lab servers. It increases the speed of copying files and saves Internet traffic significantly.  Prior to updating the databases Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 creates their backup copies in case you may want to roll back to the previous database version. You might need the update rollback option if, for example, the databases have become corrupted during the update process.

In Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 you can copy the retrieved updates to a local source (shared folder or network resource) while updating your Kaspersky Lab 2012 product and later update other computers in the local network or update standalone computers. To update anti-virus databases from the local folder you will need at least one computer connected to the Internet.
