How to set up a connection via OpenVPN

Kaspersky VPN Secure Connection can generate .ovpn file to use with OpenVPN clients, installed on your device. This file contains connection credentials to import to the device, where secure connection needs to be established. OpenVPN clients are built in, or can be installed in various devices including routers, Android TV and on a wide range of operating systems including Windows, Android, iOS, MacOS, and Linux.

To generate an .ovpn file with connection credentials:

  1. Go to the the Secure connection tab.
  2. Under Setup via OpenVPN, click Set up via OpenVPN. A list of available server locations opens.
  3. Select a VPN server location. A page with connection credentials opens.
  4. Copy and save the credentials.
  5. Click Download .ovpn.

Next you need to set up OpenVPN on your device (see example of the set up procedure below). For that, refer to your device’s User Guide. During setup use credentials you saved on step 4 and .ovpn file you downloaded on step 5.

If you use a Keenetic router, be aware that it doesn't support direct import of .ovpn files. And the format of data is a bit different from that in generated .ovpn file. You can search for "OpenVPN client" topic in official Keenetic online-help to find detailed information how to configure VPN connection for Keenetic router.

Example of the set up procedure for OpenVPN Connect app on Android device:

  1. Install OpenVPN Connect on your device.
  2. Open OpenVPN Connect and go to Menu → Import profile → File.
  3. Specify the path to the .ovpn file you downloaded (see step 5 above).
  4. Enter the credentials you copied (see step 4 above).
  5. Tap Add to save the connection settings.
  6. Swipe the connection button to enable the VPN connection.
