MDR and EDR Optimum licensing

Kaspersky Endpoint Security supports the functionality of the Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response Optimum (EDR Optimum) solutions. You can use Kaspersky Endpoint Security with these solutions in various configurations and build a custom protection system that satisfies your particular requirements. To do so, you must purchase a license for each of the solutions. The license may cover the right to use a single solution (for example, MDR Add-on) or several solutions, [EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on.

MDR and EDR Optimum support the following licensing methods:

Kaspersky Endpoint Security allows adding only one active key for MDR and EDR Optimum licensing. Therefore, if you need to activate both of these solutions, you must add one [EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on key instead of a separate key for each solution. You can also add one reserve key.

If you used a BLOB file when deploying MDR , you do not need a separate key to activate MDR. The BLOB file already contains license information.

Initial licensing of solutions

When first deploying MDR and EDR Optimum, the solutions are activated in the same way as the Kaspersky Endpoint Security application. You can add a key using the Add key task or use the automatic key distribution functionality. The license key is added to the application as a second active key or as a reserve key if you select the relevant check box.

Switching from one license to another

If your organization already has one of these solutions deployed, and the corresponding key has been added to the application, there are some special considerations involved with the licensing of the new configuration. When switching to a different license, the application does not add the new key to the application, instead it replaces the current key with the new key. The reason of this is the restriction that allows the application to add only one key to activate MDR and EDR Optimum.

For example, suppose your organization has the [EDR Optimum+MDR] solution deployed, and you decided to switch to the MDR Add-on configuration. To switch to the new configuration, you must replace the [EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on key with the MDR Add-on key.

A separate license for EDR Optimum and MDR ([EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on) is no longer available. If you want to use both of these solutions, you must activate MDR using a BLOB file, and EDR Optimum with a license key.

With the automatic key distribution feature, the application rejects license keys that cover the same number of solutions. That is, if you have an EDR Optimum Add-on key added, you cannot replace this key with a MDR Add-on key. However, you can replace the EDR Optimum Add-on key with an [EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on key. The application also rejects keys if you try to replace an MDR Add-on key with an EDR Add-on key. To replace a key, you can run the Add key task. The Add key task allows replacing license keys with any number of solutions.

If you have an [EDR Optimum+MDR] Add-on reserve key added, to add an EDR Optimum Add-on or MDR Add-on key correctly, you must first replace the reserve key with an EDR Optimum Add-on or MDR Add-on key, or alternatively, remove the reserve key and then replace the active key.
