Data Encryption in Kaspersky Total Security 2018
Latest update: July 18, 2017

The Data Encryption component in Kaspersky Total Security 2018 protects your information against theft and prevents data leakage.
The data is stored in an encrypted form in a special vault. A vault is an encrypted file that you can create using the Data Encryption component.
Vaults are encrypted with the AES XTS 256 block cipher with an effective key length of 56 bit.
A password is required to access the data stored in the vault. You can only access the data in the vault from the computer with Kaspersky Total Security 2018 installed. Upon unlocking a vault, the files within are automatically decrypted. They are then re-encrypted once the vault is locked again.
How to create a vault
- In the main window of Kaspersky Total Security 2018, click More tools.
- If you have problems opening the application window, see this guide.
- In the Tools window, select Data Encryption.
- In the Data Encryption window, click Create new data vault.
- Drag-and-drop files to add them to the vault, or click the link Add files and folders to data vault. Click the Continue button.
- In the Data Encryption window, fill in the following fields:
- Name of data vault
- Location of data vault Type the vault path or select a folder using the Browse button.
- Size of data vault Type the size or use the arrow buttons. If your computer uses the FAT32 file system, your vault cannot exceed 4 GB.
- Optionally, select the check box Create desktop shortcut for data vault.
- Select the check box Open data vault on connecting the removable drive to make the data from the vault available automatically once the removable drive is connected to the computer. This option is only available when you are creating a vault on a removable drive.
- Click Continue.
- Create a password and click Continue. A forgotten password cannot be recovered. If you lose your password, you will be unable to access your data.
- Your data has been copied to the vault. Delete the original files and folders outside the data vault by clicking Delete.
- Click Done.
- The vault you have created will be displayed in the Data Encryption window. Click Lock to encrypt the data.
