On May 12, 2017, a number of users around the world were attacked by WannaCry, a file-encrypting malware. We have analyzed the information on the infection cases and come up with instructions on how to defend against this type of hostile programs.

We have found out that the attack was facilitated by the known network vulnerability Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010. The malware would install a rootkit, which would in turn provide the intruders with an opportunity to run the file-encrypting program.

Our experts are currently analyzing the malware samples to find the decryption options.

For detailed information about the WannaCry attacks, see Kaspersky report.
