Hard drive diagnostics using S.M.A.R.T. technology in Kaspersky Security Cloud 20
The S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics technology is used in Kaspersky Security Cloud to track and predict hard drive errors. A component in Kaspersky Security Cloud analyzes the condition of the hard drive by its S.M.A.R.T. parameters. The S.M.A.R.T. parameters are described below.
Hard drive health check in Kaspersky Security Cloud is performed automatically once a week. If necessary, you can also run it manually.
When the condition of your hard drive worsens, the application will show you a warning so that you can backup your files and avoid data loss. If you receive this message during the warranty period of your computer or hard drive, contact the seller to have your hard drive replaced. If the warranty has already elapsed, contact a computer or hard drive repair center once you have backed up your files.
How to run S.M.A.R.T. hard drive diagnostics
- In the main window of Kaspersky Security Cloud, click More Tools.
- To learn how to open the main application window, see this article.
- Go to Data Protection → Hard Drive Health Monitor.
- Click Start.
S.M.A.R.T. parameters used when analyzing hard drives in Kaspersky Security Cloud
S.M.A.R.T. parameters are used for analyzing hard drive condition and performance. Each parameter has a threshold value against which the current value is compared.
Parameter value | Description |
Read Error Rate | Shows the frequency of errors during disk read operations. |
Spin Up Time | Shows the average disk spin-up time from 0 RPM to working speed. |
Start/Stop Count | Shows the total number of times a drive has been turned on and off. |
Reallocated Sectors Count | Shows the number of reallocated sectors. A sector is marked as reallocated when a read, write or verification error occurs on the disk. The data is moved to a special backup (spare area). When a large number of sectors are reallocated, the data reading speed drops sharply (up to 10% or more). |
Seek Error Rate | Determines the rate of seek errors of the magnetic heads. Seek errors will arise there if is a partial failure in the mechanical positioning system, damage to a servo, or thermal widening of the hard disk. |
Power-On Hours | Shows the count of hours in power-on state. |
Spin-Up Retry Count | Shows the number of attempts to reach the fully operational disk spin speed. |
Power Cycle Count | Shows the count of full hard disk power on/off cycles. |
End-to-End Error | Shows a count of errors that occurred when transferring data via the drive's cache. |
Reported Uncorrected Errors | Shows the count of sectors that were declared as unstable for reallocation for the whole history of the drive. If a sector is declared a unstable for a second time, the value of the attribute will also increase. |
Command Timeout | Shows the count of operations that were canceled because their execution time exceeded the drive timeout period. |
Temperature | Shows the current disk temperature. |
Hardware EСС Recovered | Shows the count of errors that were corrected using ECC (Error Correction Code). |
Reallocation Event Count | Shows the number of sector reallocation events. |
Current Pending Sector Count | Shows the number of unstable sectors for reallocation to the disk’s spare area. |
Uncorrectable Sector Count | Shows the number of unstable sectors detected when testing the disk offline. |
Disk Shift | Shows the distance the disk has shifted relative to the spindle. |
Percentage Lifetime Remaining | Shows the percentage of time remaining in which the disk will be in working condition. |
Media Wearout Indicator | Shows remaining flash memory life (on an SSD). |
Average Erase Cycle | Shows the average number of erase cycles. |
Host Writes | Shows the number of writes to the NAND memory (Not-And). |
Soft Read Error Rate | Shows the frequency of software read errors. |
Total Written | Shows the total volume of information on the disk. |
Total Read | Shows the total volume of information read from the disk. |
Max Erase Cycle | Shows the maximum possible number of disk erase cycles. |
Total Erase Cycle | Shows the total number of disk erase cycles. |
Available Spare | Shows the amount of spare memory remaining on the disk. |
Unknown | A parameter that could not be determined. |
Reasons why it might not be possible to run S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics
- Your hard drive does not support S.M.A.R.T. technology.
- The S.M.A.R.T. feature has been disabled on your hard drive.
- Kaspersky Security Cloud does not support:
- The type of the hard drive
- The type of the hard drive’s USB controller
- The hard drive is disconnected
