Update Kaspersky Password Manager
A Kaspersky Password Manager update fixes bugs, adds new features, and improves the performance of existing features.
Update since 9.2 version
Automatic updates are available from version 9.2 Patch V. For earlier versions, you need to remove the application manually and install the latest version from the Kaspersky website. Otherwise, you will get an error.
Kaspersky Password Manager checks the update server every 3 hours for a new version of the application. If a new version is available, Kaspersky Password Manager downloads it to your computer in silent mode.
After downloading the new version, the application compares all agreements from the previous version with the agreements in the update. If nothing requires user actions, Kaspersky Password Manager starts the update automatically.
If terms and conditions of the End User License Agreement or Privacy Policy has changed, the application prompts you to review and accept new agreements.
If you don't agree with new terms and conditions of the application usage, you continue using the previous version of Kaspersky Password Manager, which agreements you have accepted.
After the update is installed, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to restart the application to apply changes.

- Kaspersky Small Office Security (except for trial subscription)
- Kaspersky Security Cloud
- Kaspersky (if you have Kaspersky Plus or Kaspersky Premium subscription)
If you connect Kaspersky Password Manager to a My Kaspersky account with a subscription for one of these applications, Kaspersky Password Manager switches to the premium subscription. How Kaspersky Password Manager protects your data
About your vault
A vault is an encrypted file that contains all of your accounts, notes, and other data. By default, your vault is located at: %LocalAppData%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Password Manager
For security reasons Kaspersky Password Manager automatically blocks access to the vault after a specified period of inactivity or when the screen saver turns on. You must enter the main password to access your vault. This method of data storage keeps your valuable information safe even if your device with Kaspersky Password Manager gets lost or stolen.
About the encryption
Kaspersky Password Manager encrypts data using a symmetric key algorithm based on the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). A key is derived from your main password using Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2).
The AES algorithm is used worldwide to protect top-secret data. This algorithm has low RAM requirements, which means your data is encrypted and decrypted within seconds.
About the main password
The main password is a single password that Kaspersky Password Manager uses to protect all your data, including other passwords. You create the main password during the initial setup of Kaspersky Password Manager. Every time you try to access the data vault, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you for the main password. The application uses the main password to encrypt your data in the vault.
It is recommended that you set a main password that is at least eight characters long and contains uppercase and lowercase letters, digits, and special characters.
For security reasons, Kaspersky Password Manager doesn't store the main password on any of your devices or in cloud storage. We recommend that you memorize your main password, or write it down and keep it in a secure place, because it can't be restored or recovered if forgotten.
If you forget your main password, you will no longer be able to access your data. In this case, you will have to create a new vault and protect it with a new main password. Then you will be able to add new data to the vault.
Data types protected by Kaspersky Password Manager
You can add several types of entries to Kaspersky Password Manager and organize your entries by moving them into folders.
Accounts
Websites and Apps
A website or app account is a combination of a login and password required to authenticate a user on a website or in an application.
For websites, Kaspersky Password Manager saves the following information to the entry:
- Website name. Use a meaningful website name to quickly find the website that you want to edit or log in to.
- Website address. Kaspersky Password Manager uses this field to recognize a website's sign-in page and offer accounts you can use to sign in.
- Accounts. You can save multiple accounts for a website. For example, you might have personal and business email addresses from the same email provider.
For applications, Kaspersky Password Manager saves the following information to the entry:
- Application name. Use a meaningful name so you can quickly find the entry you need.
- Accounts. You can save multiple accounts for an application.
For quicker access, accounts for websites and accounts for applications are stored separately.
Other
Other is an all-purpose account type. Unlike Website and App accounts, this account type has only Login and Password fields, and filling in the Login field is optional. Here you can save any important code or password, for example Wi-Fi password or door code.
Bank cards
You can add bank card numbers, other details, PINs, and the card issuer's customer support contact information to Kaspersky Password Manager.
Addresses
You can save addresses, names, email addresses, and phone numbers in address entries.
Documents
You can store important documents (for example, scanned Passports/IDs and PDF files) in Kaspersky Password Manager to keep them safe and always close at hand.
Notes
You can use notes to store any kind of text information.
Notes are encrypted and stored the same way as other data types.
You can use the clipboard to copy and paste note text to a web page or application.
Sync data across devices
If you are connected to My Kaspersky, when you add data to your vault on one device, the application automatically sends this data to cloud storage, and then from cloud storage to your other devices that have Kaspersky Password Manager installed and that are connected to My Kaspersky using the same My Kaspersky account. Keeping your data up-to-date and consistent on all your devices also helps restore your data if you replace or lose a device. Automatic sync is enabled by default.
If automatic sync is enabled but the data on your devices is out of sync, you can sync data manually.
Sync across devices after update to Kaspersky Password Manager 10
When you update Kaspersky Password Manager to the version 10 or higher, your vault database becomes flexible. It lets you sync your data across devices, even when using different versions of the application on your devices.
Entry types and properties can change from version to version. For example, documents can be categorized on desktop computers running macOS and Windows but not on mobile devices.
Your data may not be fully available in the following cases:
- You add an entry of a new type or fill out new field not supported in the previous version.
These entries are available only on devices with the latest version of the application. On devices running the previous version, the application displays the number of entries that cannot be synced or warns that some data in an entry cannot be displayed properly.
- Some entry types are no longer supported in the latest version.
These entries are archived and synced only between devices running the previous version. When you update the application, these entries may be converted or deleted. You will have a chance to save any entries before they are deleted. Archived entries are not counted against the limitations of the free version.
- Some fields are no longer supported in the latest version.
This data is synced between devices running either the latest or previous versions. You can edit these fields only in the previous version.
Manage your vault online
You can manage data in your vault from any device connected to the internet.

You also can add websites, addresses and bank cards from your browser. When you fill out an online form, Kaspersky Password Manager suggests saving the form information.
Kaspersky Password Manager also prompts you to update an entry if you:
- Change or restore your password for a website.
- Sign in to a website with new credentials.
- Enter a new card holder name, expiration date, or validation code for a previously added to Kaspersky Password Manager bank card number.
Kaspersky Password Manager automatically detects the website domain level and prompts you to specify the authentication scope. You can save one account for a website and use it to log in on website subdomains. If you use different accounts for a second level domain and subdomains, you can save them as separate entries.

Sort and group entries, customize entry view
By default, entries are displayed in the list view in alphabetical order. You can switch to the tile view, sort entries manually, and create folders to group entries. You can add entries of any type to a folder. Folders are always displayed before entries in alphabetical order and can't be sorted manually. Folders sync across your devices. Sort and view settings don't sync across devices.
If you have manually sorted entries in a section, all newly added entries are displayed at the end of the section in alphabetical order. Entries sorted in the Accounts section are automatically sorted the same way in the browser extensions.
You can reset custom sort settings to display all entries in alphabetical order. If you reset custom sort settings, they can't be restored.

Use autosave and autofill
Automatically save data
When you visit websites and enter logins, passwords, bank card details, or addresses in online forms, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to add them to the vault.
Sign in to websites
When you visit a website, Kaspersky Password Manager searches the vault for accounts that you have saved for that website. Depending on the search results, the application does one of the following:
- If the vault contains one account for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager fills out the login and password fields.
- If the vault contains several accounts for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to choose the account that you want to sign in with.
If you have enabled automatic login and chosen a default account for the website, Kaspersky Password Manager will sign you in automatically.
Kaspersky Password Manager disables automatic login on websites containing two or more sign-in forms.
Open a website from the main application window
Open a website from the extension menu
Automatically fill out addresses and bank card details
When you shop online, Kaspersky Password Manager searches the vault for bank cards and addresses to fill the shipping and payment fields. If the vault contains appropriate entries, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to choose the address or bank card that you want to use for the online form. If Kaspersky Password Manager finds data that can be entered into a field of an online form, the application displays the key icon next to the field.
You can disable autosave and autofill if you don't want Kaspersky Password Manager to fill out online forms for you.

Generate a strong password
The security of your data largely depends on the strength of your password. A password is considered strong if it contains at least 16 characters, including uppercase and lowercase Latin letters, digits, and special characters. Kaspersky Password Manager generates unique and strong passwords. You can specify the password length and choose whether to include digits, letters and special characters. You can use Password Generator when you create a new website account or change your password for an existing account.
Kaspersky Password Manager saves the last 5 generated passwords copied to the clipboard, in case you lose them. You can view your copied passwords in the Password Generator history. The application stores copied passwords on your computer and doesn't sync them across devices.
If your vault is unlocked, the Password Generator is available.

Back up data
You can create a backup copy of your vault at any time.
When creating a backup copy of the vault, Kaspersky Password Manager exports entries to a file stored on your device. The backup copy is protected by the main password used when the backup copy was created. The backup copy is stored in encrypted form in EDB format. By default, Kaspersky Password Manager creates backup copies in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Kaspersky Password Manager\Backup.
You can transfer a backup copy of your vault to other devices. If you create a new vault, you can import data from the backup copy into the new vault.
Import and export data
You can import data to Kaspersky Password Manager from:
- A backup copy of your vault or a vault created from a previous supported version (9.2 or later) of Kaspersky Password Manager
- Your browsers' built-in password managers
- Other password managers
Import data from your browsers' built-in password managers
Import data from other password managers
If you use the free version of Kaspersky Password Manager and import more entries than allowed in the free version, these entries will be inactive after they are imported.
You can export your notes and credentials from the vault to a text file and then print them.
Export data in printable format from My Kaspersky
Check passwords security
Your accounts are at greater risk if they have the same or weak passwords (for example, qwerty, 12345) or passwords based on information that can be easily guessed or obtained (for example, names of relatives or dates of birth).
With Kaspersky Password Manager, you can quickly find out how strong your passwords are and whether the same passwords are used for multiple accounts.
When you type a password in an online form for creating or changing a password, the Kaspersky Password Manager extension displays recommendations on how to create a strong password, including information about the strength of the password you are typing in.
Check for compromised passwords
For additional security, Kaspersky Password Manager can check whether your passwords have been hacked or leaked.
The application uses Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (SHA-256) to check for compromised passwords. The application generates SHA-256 message digests from each password in your vault and compares them with SHA-256 messages from a database of compromised passwords. If the SHA-256 messages match, the application warns you that your password is compromised and you better change it.
By default, the check for compromised passwords is enabled.
Kaspersky Password Manager check for compromised passwords only active entries.

Scan your computer for important documents
Kaspersky Password Manager helps save time and scans your device for files that may contain sensitive information. The application searches for JPEG, PNG, BMP and PDF files containing text. The files found during this search are analyzed and assign to categories: Passport (ID card), Driver License, and Bank Card. You can view the search results, choose which documents to add to your vault, and change the document categories.
Kaspersky Password Manager supports the following document categories:
- Passports (ID cards)
- Driver's Licenses
- Bank Cards
- Insurances
- Contracts
- Other
During the search, Kaspersky Password Manager skips PDF files larger than 20 MB, images larger than 100 MB, and images with resolution less than 256x256 px or higher than 40 MP.
Kaspersky Password Manager optimize files before adding them in to your vault. Big files are compressed: the final size of a document in the vault is not more than 6 MB. PNG and BMP images are converted to JPEG format.
When a document is added to your vault, Kaspersky Password Manager reminds you to delete the original file from your device for security reasons. If you need documents from your vault, you can export them to your device at any time.

Download documents from your vault
You can save documents from your vault to your device. You can change the document name before saving it on your device.
The format of the downloaded file matches the format of the document in the vault (JPEG or PDF).
After you save a document on your device it is no longer protected by Kaspersky Password Manager. You must protect the file on your own.

Change the main password
For security reasons, we recommend that you change your main password on a regular basis. If you suspect that your main password has been compromised, change it immediately.
It's impossible to change your main password if:
- Automatic sync is disabled.
- There is no internet connection.
The main password was changed on another device and it's not synced with the device you're currently using to change the password. Please, sync all your devices first.

What to do if you have forgotten the main password
For security reasons, Kaspersky Password Manager doesn't store the main password on any of your devices or in cloud storage. We recommend that you memorize your main password, or write it down and keep it in a secure place, because it can't be restored or recovered if forgotten.
If you forget your main password, you will no longer be able to access your data. In this case, you will have to create a new vault and protect it with a new main password. Then you will be able to add new data to the vault.
You can save a backup copy of your vault before deleting it. You can use it to restore your data if you remember your main password.
Create a new vault protected with a new main password
Confirm dangerous actions
Kaspersky Password Manager provides additional protection by emailing a verification code to confirm potentially dangerous actions.
Actions that require additional confirmation:
- Resetting the main password
- Replacing a cloud database by a local one
If Kaspersky Password Manager is associated with a My Kaspersky account
In this scenario, you can confirm database cleanup by entering a verification code that will be emailed to you.
If data sync is turned off, you can only clean up the local database by entering your My Kaspersky account password on the Enter the password for your My Kaspersky account step. You also need to enter the security code from a text message if two-factor authentication is enabled.
You may get the "Password is incorrect" error if you use an account from a third-party provider that is not linked to a My Kaspersky account. Accounts from third-party providers are not allowed to perform dangerous actions like database cleanups.
To link an account from third-party provider to a My Kaspersky account, perform the following steps:
- Go to My Kaspersky:
- By clicking the Forgot your password? link on the Enter the password for your My Kaspersky account step.
- Or by using a direct link to My Kaspersky.
- Log in to My Kaspersky using the same third-party-provided account as in Kaspersky Password Manager.
- If you use an account from a third-party provider to sign in to My Kaspersky for the first time, you need to specify a region and accept the Terms of Use of the Web-Portal.
- Click the Set password button.
- Specify the My Kaspersky account credentials and click Save changes.
Now you can enter the new password for the My Kaspersky account on the Enter the password for your My Kaspersky account step to complete the local database cleanup operation.
If Kaspersky Password Manager is not associated with a My Kaspersky account
In this scenario, your local database is not protected by My Kaspersky and the option to require a verification code to confirm local database cleanups is not available.

Password check
Your accounts are at greater risk if they have the same or weak passwords (for example, qwerty, 12345) or passwords based on information that can be easily guessed or obtained (for example, names of relatives or dates of birth).
