Exporting a certificate to a file

To export a certificate with a private key to a file:

  1. Open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Select FileAdd/Remove Snap-in.

    The Add or Remove Snap-ins window opens.

  3. Select the Certificates snap-in and click Add.

    The Certificates Snap-in window opens.

  4. Select My user account and click Finish.
  5. In the Add/Remove Snap-ins window, click OK.
  6. In the console tree, select Certificates – Current UserPersonalCertificates.
  7. In the workspace, select a previously created certificate and double-click to open its properties.
  8. Select the Details tab.
  9. Click Copy to File.

    The Certificate Export Wizard starts.

  10. In the Export Private Key window, select the Yes, export the private key option.
  11. In the Export File Format window:
    1. Select the Personal Information Exchange – PKCS #12 (.PFX) option.
    2. Select the Include all certificates in the certification path if possible check box.
  12. In the Security window:
    1. Select the Password check box.
    2. In the entry field under the check box, set a password to secure the certificate.
    3. In the Confirm password field, type the password again.
  13. In the File to Export window:
    1. Click Browse.
    2. The Save as window opens.
    3. Select the path for saving the certificate file on your computer.
    4. Enter the file name and click Save.
  14. In the Completing the Certificate Export Wizard window, click Finish.

The certificate with the private key will be exported to a file. The file will be saved at the specified path on your computer.
