About Kaspersky Password Manager

Kaspersky Password Manager securely stores your data, protecting it with a master password.

Kaspersky Password Manager offers the following functionality:

  • Data storage. Kaspersky Password Manager stores passwords to webmail, social networks, online stores, and other websites, as well as application passwords, contact information, bank card numbers and PIN codes, passport details, and other important personal data in the vault.
  • Importing data. Kaspersky Password Manager lets you quickly gather all important data into one application. If you have previously used password managers embedded into browsers or other password management applications, you can easily transfer their stored logins and passwords into Kaspersky Password Manager.
  • Autofilling of login and password entry fields. When you need to sign in on a website, Kaspersky Password Manager enters your login and password and logs you into the website automatically.
  • Identity protection. Kaspersky Password Manager stores all data in encrypted form and decrypts it when you access it by entering the master password. The master password is not stored anywhere and only you know it.
  • Automatic synchronization of data on all devices. Kaspersky Password Manager lets you automatically keep the data up to date on all your devices on which Kaspersky Password Manager is installed. This means that when you add data to Kaspersky Password Manager on one device, the application automatically sends this data to your online vault, and from the online vault to the rest of your devices. If you replace or lose your device, Kaspersky Password Manager lets you restore your data via synchronization.
  • Data backup. Kaspersky Password Manager lets you create a backup copy of all data stored in the application at any time. If necessary, you can always recover data from the backup copy.

Creating the master password

Kaspersky Password Manager uses the master password to protect all your personal data. The master password is created when the application is used for the first time. Do not use a password that can be easily guessed (such as last names, first names, or dates of birth). To create a strong password, use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

The master password provides access to all your personal data. Remember that if the master password is lost, you will lose access to all passwords stored in the vault.

When the application starts, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to:

  • Create a master password for the vault, if it is the first time that you have used Kaspersky Password Manager.
  • Enter the existing master password, if you have previously created a master password and used Kaspersky Password Manager.
  • Import your existing vault, if you saved it in a previous version of the application.

To create a master password:

  1. In the Set master password window, enter the new master password in the Create master password field.

Kaspersky Password Manager automatically tests the strength of your password and displays its strength level next to the Create master password field.

  2. In the Confirm master password field, enter the new master password again.
  3. Click the Done button.

The master password is created.

You can change the master password later.

About the End User License Agreement

The End User License Agreement is a binding agreement between you and AO Kaspersky Lab, stipulating the terms on which you may use the application.

Read through the terms of the End User License Agreement carefully before you start using the application.

It is deemed that you accept the terms of the End User License Agreement by confirming that you agree with the End User License Agreement when installing the application. If you do not accept the terms of the End User License Agreement, you must abort application installation and not use the application.

Page top

About the license

A license is a right to use the application, granted under the End User License Agreement.

Having a license entitles you to the following kinds of services:

  • Assistance from Kaspersky Lab Technical Support.
  • Other services available from Kaspersky Lab or its partners.

The scope of available services and duration of application use depend on the application version installed on the device.

Kaspersky Password Manager is available in two versions:

  • Free version. The free version of the application is distributed free of charge and can be used for an unlimited period. If you use the free version of Kaspersky Password Manager on all your devices that are connected with the same account to the My Kaspersky portal, the End User License Agreement limits the amount of data (logins, passwords, and identities) that you can store. To remove the restriction on the amount of data, you must purchase the Premium version of Kaspersky Password Manager.

The free version of Kaspersky Password Manager may be unavailable in some countries.

  • Premium. By using Kaspersky Password Manager Premium, you can store an unlimited amount of data on all your devices that are connected to the My Kaspersky portal with the same account. The license for Kaspersky Password Manager Premium is valid for a limited period of time.

When the license for Kaspersky Password Manager Premium expires, you can continue using the application. To do so, you can either renew the license for Kaspersky Password Manager Premium or switch to the free version. If you exceed the data limit in the free version of Kaspersky Password Manager or switch to the free version, you must choose the data that you want to use in the free version of the application. Other data will be saved, but will not be available for use.

The activation code is sent to the email address that you specify when ordering online.

The effective period of a license to use Kaspersky Password Manager on several devices connected with the same account to My Kaspersky portal begins to elapse on the date when Kaspersky Password Manager Premium is purchased on My Kaspersky portal.

If you have lost or accidentally deleted your activation code after activating the application, contact Kaspersky Lab Technical Support to recover your code.

About data provision

To make protection of your data more effective as you use Kaspersky Password Manager, you can send application runtime statistics to Kaspersky Lab.

About data sent via Kaspersky Security Network

By accepting the terms of the End User License Agreement you agree to automatically send information about application runtime events to Kaspersky Lab:

  • Changes to application windows. Kaspersky Password Manager monitors the operations of opening the main application window and changing the content of active windows. The date and time of each event and the ID of the current window or section are logged.

Statistics on changes in application windows do not contain the master password, IP address of the proxy server, or account credentials of the proxy server user.

  • Changes to application settings. Kaspersky Password Manager monitors changes to values of application settings. The date and time of each event, ID of the modified setting, old and new setting values are logged for each event.
  • Application notifications. Kaspersky Password Manager monitors notifications appearing during operation of the application. The date and time and ID of the notification window are logged for each event.
  • Usage of application interface elements. Kaspersky Password Manager monitors usage of application interface elements (for example: navigation between sections and clicking of buttons). The date and time and ID of the application interface element used are logged for each event
  • Work with browser extensions. Kaspersky Password Manager keeps track of username and password fields on websites. When these fields are detected, the application records the website's address, date and time, relative coordinates of the fields' positions on the website, and the user's anonymized IP address.
  • Application updates. Kaspersky Password Manager monitors every startup of application updates. The following information is logged for each update operation: version of the update component, number of crashed and failed update attempts, ID of the type of update task, ID of an update error after a failed update, information on the operation of the application after the update.

Every transmission of statistics additionally includes the following information:

  • Application name

  • Application version (free, Premium)

At the first startup of the application, Kaspersky Password Manager sends the following data to the KSN service:

  • Application ID in the KSN services
  • PPCS ID
  • Full application version
  • Unique ID of the device where Kaspersky Password Manager is installed
  • IP address of the device

The KSN service stores only the first three bytes of the IP address of the device.

Kaspersky Lab protects any information received in this way as prescribed by law and applicable rules of Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab uses any received information in anonymized form and as general statistics only. Aggregate statistics are automatically generated from the source information that is received, and do not contain any personal data or other confidential information. The original information received is destroyed as new information is accumulated (once a year). Aggregate statistics are stored indefinitely.

All your data is stored in a special encrypted vault that can be accessed only with the master password. This method of data storage keeps your valuable information safe even if your device with Kaspersky Password Manager gets lost or stolen.

Kaspersky Password Manager encrypts data using symmetrical encryption based on the AES algorithm (block size = 128, key size = 256, padding = PKCS7, mode = CBC).

You can choose which data to use to fill in registration forms and quickly enter your personal data or business contact details.

You can store data of various types in Kaspersky Password Manager:

  • Accounts – logins and passwords for signing in to websites or applications
  • Identities – a special set of entries (such as first name and last name, date of birth, email address, phone number, and bank card and bank account details) for quickly filling out website or application registration forms
  • Notes – any personal data in the form of text that you want to protect against unauthorized access.

Kaspersky Password Manager fills the login and password fields and performs automatic login on websites using your account credentials.

You can view data stored in the vault from any device on which Kaspersky Password Manager is installed.

All of this is possible thanks to your account on the My Kaspersky portal.

A My Kaspersky portal account is a single account required to sign in to My Kaspersky portal as well as to use the portal and certain Kaspersky Lab applications.

My Kaspersky portal is a one-stop online resource for remote management and licensing of Kaspersky Lab applications, downloading application installation package to devices, and getting technical support. An account is required to sign in to My Kaspersky portal.

About My Kaspersky portal accounts

A My Kaspersky portal account is a single account required to sign in to My Kaspersky portal as well as to use the portal and certain Kaspersky Lab applications.

A My Kaspersky portal account is used to:

Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you to create a My Kaspersky portal account when you use the application for the first time.

You can also create this account on the My Kaspersky portal.

A My Kaspersky portal account consists of the email address and password that you specified when creating the account. The password must contain at least eight characters and include one number, one uppercase letter, and one lowercase letter.

If the password you want to use for logging into My Kaspersky portal is too weak or common, the portal account is not created.

Once you have created the account, the message with the activation link is sent to the email address you have specified.

After activating the account, you can use it to sign in to My Kaspersky portal.

If you do not activate your My Kaspersky portal account by clicking the link in the email message within one week, the account will be deleted. You will not be able to use Kaspersky Password Manager until you connect it to a new account.

Data synchronization across all your devices that have Kaspersky Password Manager installed will start working as soon as you connect your devices to the My Kaspersky portal using the same account.

If you already have a My Kaspersky portal account, you can enter your credentials to:

  • Use Kaspersky Password Manager
  • Access My Kaspersky portal

Accounts

An account is a set of data the user needs to sign in to a specific website or application. Kaspersky Password Manager can store the following account data:

  • Account type. An account can be linked with a website (web account) or application (application account).
  • Login and password for signing in to the specified website or application (you can specify several sets of credentials).
Page top

Identities

In addition to user name and password, website registration forms often require other details, such as first and last name, date of birth, email address, phone number, and so forth. To store such data, Kaspersky Password Manager uses special sets of records known as identities.

Kaspersky Password Manager has standard entry fields for specifying identities.

If you need to store other data that does not fit the available entry fields for identity data, you can use a different data type, known as notes.

You can create multiple identities. For example, you may want to keep information for online store registration forms separate from information for social networks.

When registering on a website or in an application, you can select the relevant identity in Kaspersky Password Manager and use it to fill in the registration fields.

Notes

Notes are intended for storing personal data (such as passport and driver's license details) as free-form text, in contrast to the Identities section.

Kaspersky Password Manager can store the following note data:

  • Note name. The note name is used for locating a specific note in the vault.
  • Text of the note. The note text can contain any of your data, in free-text form. The maximum length of note text is 4096 characters.

About the master password

The master password is the primary tool for protecting your data. You can create a master password after you register on the My Kaspersky portal. The master password is linked to a My Kaspersky portal account and provides access to the data vault from any device. The application uses the master password to encrypt your data in the vault. Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you for the master password every time you attempt to access the vault.

The master password can contain numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters in any of the supported alphabets, and special characters.

Kaspersky Lab recommends using a master password that is at least eight characters long and contains uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

To keep your data safe, Kaspersky Password Manager does not store the master password on your devices and does not transmit it to the online vault. Memorize or write down your master password, because it is impossible to recover a forgotten master password.

Any data stored in a vault that is protected with a forgotten master password cannot be recovered. You can create a new data vault and protect it with a new master password. When a new data vault is created, all data from the existing data vault will be permanently deleted. You will need to re-add data to the new data vault. You can save a copy of the data vault before its deletion and restore data from it if you remember the master password.

About the vault and online vault

A Kaspersky Password Manager vault is an encrypted file containing all of your accounts, notes, and other personal data.

By default, the vault is located at the following path in Microsoft operating systems: %LocalAppData%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Password Manager.

To open the %LocalAppData% folder,

enter these values in the search field in the Start menu.

Kaspersky Password Manager synchronizes data between the vault and the online vault:

The online vault consists of Kaspersky Lab servers used for synchronizing data across devices with Kaspersky Password Manager installed.

Thanks to the online vault, you can access Kaspersky Password Manager data from any device as well as restore data if a device is replaced or lost.

Synchronizing data on all devices

Data synchronization lets you use and maintain an up-to-date version of the data vault on all your devices, and lets you restore data if your device is replaced or lost. For example, you can add new accounts for websites in Kaspersky Password Manager on your laptop, and then log in to those websites under new accounts from a tablet or smartphone on which Kaspersky Password Manager is installed.

To synchronize data on all your devices, you must install Kaspersky Password Manager on each device and, when Kaspersky Password Manager starts for the first time, specify the same account for connecting to the My Kaspersky portal. If you do this, you will be able to automatically and manually synchronize data.

Kaspersky Password Manager automatically synchronizes data between the vault and online vault in the following cases:

  • When Kaspersky Password Manager connects to My Kaspersky for the first time.
  • When changes are made to the data vault.
  • When changes are made to the online vault from another device.

Internet access is required for data synchronization.

The status of data synchronization is displayed in the lower left corner of the main application window.

To disable automatic synchronization:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower part of the window, click the button.
  3. In the application tray menu, select the Settings item.

    The application settings window opens.

  4. In the left part of the window, select the General section.
  5. In the Synchronization section clear the check box.

Data synchronization will be disabled.

To enable data synchronization:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower-left corner of the main application window, click the KPM8MR5_Win_Sync_Pause button.
  3. In the window that opens, click the Enable synchronization button.

The application will enable automatic data synchronization. The Synchronize passwords and data across all your devices with Kaspersky Password Manager installed check box will be selected. After enabling automatic synchronization, you can manually synchronize data.

If automatic synchronization is enabled but the data on your devices is out of sync, you can manually run synchronization.

To manually synchronize data:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower-left corner of the main application window, click the KPM2.0_Win_Sync button.
  3. In the window that opens, click the Synchronize now button.

What to do if you have forgotten the master password

If forgotten, the master password is impossible to recover.

By default, the application creates a subfolder named kpm_<copy creation date> on your device in the folder named %LOCALAPPDATA%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Password Manager\Backup. In this subfolder, the application creates two files in which it saves a copy of the current data vault. These files are stored in encrypted form in the PDB and PDB-CRYPTO formats.

To create a vault and protect it with a new master password:

  1. In the master password entry window of Kaspersky Password Manager, click the Forgot your master password? link.

A window opens, notifying that you need to create a new vault.

  2. Make sure that the Save a copy of the current data vault check box is selected so that you will have the capability to restore data if you remember the master password.
  3. If you agree to create the new vault, click Continue.
  4. In the window that opens, enter the password to your My Kaspersky portal account to create a new data vault and use it on all devices connected to your portal account.
  5. Click the button.
  6. In the window that appears, in the Master password field, enter the new master password.
  7. In the Confirm master password field, enter the new master password again.
  8. Click the Done button.

The new vault is now created. The vault with the forgotten master password is deleted automatically. A copy of the data vault will be created in the default folder.

Managing accounts

Accounts are used in Kaspersky Password Manager to store logins and passwords and to automatically fill in the login and password entry fields.

You can add the following types of accounts into Kaspersky Password Manager:

  • Web accounts that are used to log in to websites.
  • Application accounts for signing in to applications, such as email clients.

Each account contains a login and password, as well as information about where these account credentials are used. If you use the same account credentials to log in to a website and an application, you can link these accounts. This lets you centrally modify an account.

Web accounts added to Kaspersky Password Manager can be used to insert data into the login and password fields on a website or to automatically log in to a website.

If you log in to a website using account credentials that have not been added to Kaspersky Password Manager, the application will automatically prompt you to add the account to the data vault.

Creating a strong password for an account

Data security directly depends on password strength. Data may be at risk in the following cases:

  • A single password is set for all accounts.
  • Passwords are too weak.
  • Information that is easy to guess is used as a password (such as family members' names or dates of birth).

You can use Kaspersky Password Manager's Password Generator to create unique strong passwords to keep your data secure.

A password is strong if it contains at least eight characters and includes special characters, numbers, and uppercase and lowercase letters.

To create a strong password using Password Generator:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower part of the window, click the button.
  3. In the application tray menu, select Password Generator.
  4. In the Password Generator window that appears, in the Password length field, specify the number of characters in the password.

A password can be 4 to 99 characters long. Longer passwords are stronger.

  5. If necessary, configure the advanced settings of Password Generator by selecting or clearing check boxes for settings in the drop-down section.
  6. Click the Create password button.

About importing data into Kaspersky Password Manager

Kaspersky Password Manager lets you transfer data into the application so that it can all be saved in one location. Importing data helps you save time filling the data vault without having to manually add the account credentials into the application.

You can import data from the following sources into Kaspersky Password Manager:

  • From data files that were created in previous versions of Kaspersky Password Manager;
  • From password managers embedded into browsers.
  • From other password management applications.

After importing, Kaspersky Password Manager automatically synchronizes the imported data with the online vault.

The free version of the application limits the number of active accounts (no more than 15). Although you can import any number of accounts into the application, only 15 of them can be active. This limitation is absent from the Premium version. All accounts are active after they are imported.

Importing data from previous versions of Kaspersky Password Manager

Kaspersky Password Manager lets you import data files created in previous versions of Kaspersky Password Manager into the application.

If you used versions of Kaspersky Password Manager that do not support updates, you can migrate your data into a new version of the application with the help of the import function. You must export the data vault to a file, then import it into the new version of Kaspersky Password Manager. You can import data files in the PWS, SPDB and PDB formats into Kaspersky Password Manager. Access to the contents of a data file is protected from unauthorized access by a master password. Only Kaspersky Password Manager can be used to access the contents of a data file.

If the application fails to import data as web accounts or application accounts (for example, due to a mismatch between the data format and the currently adopted user account format), Kaspersky Password Manager imports these accounts as notes. In this case, the account login is used as the note name and the account password is transformed into the note text.

When starting Kaspersky Password Manager for the first time, you can import a vault that has been saved when using an earlier version of the application, or you can create a new one.

To import a previously saved data vault from a file:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower part of the window, click the button.
  3. In the application tray menu, select the Settings item.

    The application settings window opens.

  4. In the left part of the window, select the Import/export data section.
  5. In the Importing data vault section, click the Import button.
  6. In the window that opens, specify the file from which you want to import the data vault.
  7. Click the Open button.
  8. In the window that opens, enter the master password to access the contents of the imported file.
  9. Click OK.

Data from the selected file will be copied into Kaspersky Password Manager. Once the import is complete, the application will display a window containing a report on the number of imported account credentials.

  10. Click the Continue button to exit the report window.

Importing data from browsers

Kaspersky Password Manager lets you import account credentials from browsers. If you have saved website logins and passwords in password managers embedded into browsers, you can easily transfer this data to Kaspersky Password Manager and store it under the protection of a master password.

During the import, the application copies the logins and passwords from the selected browser and adds the accounts in the Websites section. When importing, the application automatically assigns names to websites based on the addresses of those websites.

To import data from a password manager embedded into a browser:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower part of the window, click the button.
  3. In the application tray menu, select the Settings item.

    The application settings window opens.

  4. In the left part of the window, select the Import/export data section.
  5. In the drop-down list of the Import data from browsers section, select the browser in which the account credentials are saved.
  6. Click the Import button.

Account credentials will be copied from the password manager into Kaspersky Password Manager. Once the import is complete, the application will display a window containing a report on the number of imported accounts.

  7. Click the Continue button to exit the report window.

Importing data from password management applications

Kaspersky Password Manager lets you import account credentials from other password management applications.

If you have used other applications to store account credentials and manage passwords, you can easily transfer this data into Kaspersky Password Manager. Kaspersky Password Manager can import files that were exported from the following applications: KeePass, LastPass, 1Password, Norton, and Dashlane.

In order to import data into Kaspersky Password Manager, the data must be exported to a CSV file from the other application.

Kaspersky Password Manager cannot ensure the integrity and completeness of data imported from other password management applications.

To import data from a password management application:

  1. Open the main application window.
  2. In the lower part of the window, click the button.
  3. In the application tray menu, select the Settings item.

AO Kaspersky Lab

Kaspersky Lab is a world-renowned vendor of systems protecting computers against various threats, including viruses and other malware, unsolicited email (spam), network and hacking attacks.

In 2008, Kaspersky Lab was rated among the world’s top four leading vendors of information security software solutions for end users (IDC Worldwide Endpoint Security Revenue by Vendor). Kaspersky Lab is the preferred vendor of computer protection systems for home users in Russia (“IDC Endpoint Tracker 2014”).

Kaspersky Lab was founded in Russia in 1997. It has since grown into an international group of companies with 34 offices in 31 countries. The company employs more than 3000 qualified specialists.

Products. Kaspersky Lab’s products provide protection for all systems—from home computers to large corporate networks.

The personal product range includes security applications for desktop, laptop, and tablet computers, smartphones and other mobile devices.

The company offers protection and control solutions and technologies for workstations and mobile devices, virtual machines, file and web servers, mail gateways, and firewalls. The company's portfolio also features specialized products providing protection against DDoS attacks, protection for industrial control systems, and prevention of financial fraud. Used in conjunction with Kaspersky Lab’s centralized management system, these solutions ensure effective automated protection for companies and organizations of any size against computer threats. Kaspersky Lab's products are certified by the major test laboratories, are compatible with the software of many suppliers of computer applications, and are optimized to run on many hardware platforms.

Kaspersky Lab’s virus analysts work around the clock. Every day they uncover hundreds of thousands of new computer threats, create tools to detect and disinfect them, and include signatures of those threats in the databases used by Kaspersky Lab applications.

Technologies. Many technologies that are now part and parcel of modern anti-virus tools were originally developed by Kaspersky Lab. It is no coincidence that many other developers use the Kaspersky Anti-Virus kernel in their products, including: Alcatel-Lucent, Alt-N, Asus, BAE Systems, Blue Coat, Check Point, Cisco Meraki, Clearswift, D-Link, Facebook, General Dynamics, H3C, Juniper Networks, Lenovo, Microsoft, NETGEAR, Openwave Messaging, Parallels, Qualcomm, Samsung, Stormshield, Toshiba, Trustwave, Vertu, ZyXEL. Many of the company’s innovative technologies are patented.

Achievements. Over the years, Kaspersky Lab has won hundreds of awards for its services in combating computer threats. Following tests and research conducted by the reputed Austrian test laboratory AV-Comparatives in 2014, Kaspersky Lab ranked among the top two vendors by the number of Advanced+ certificates earned and was eventually awarded the Top Rated certificate. But Kaspersky Lab's main achievement is the loyalty of its users worldwide. The company’s products and technologies protect more than 400 million users, and its corporate clients number more than 270,000.

  • If you use the same application on different devices, and data synchronization results in a different account for the application on each device.

This window also shows all accounts linked with the selected account. Changes made to the selected account are applied to all web or application accounts that are linked with it.
